Most of my deceased family members never identified as photographers, yet I envy the way they managed to capture family moments in a lively and unexpected way. I’m thankful they were there to illustrate what could otherwise never be seen or known. Since many of those family members have passed, I’m left with the slides they made long before I was born.
In this series, I add to my family’s ongoing image archive by carrying their slides with me through my daily life. I rephotograph the slides in landscapes that remind me of passed loved ones and the stories they told. Holding the slide viewer close to the lens, I’m able to superimpose the slide images into the picture at these specific locations. This method gives me a chance to reflect on passed loved ones and imagine how they would respond if they were in the landscape with me. It's a way for me to be in dialogue with my relatives, share experiences with them, and make something together that can be added to the ongoing visual archive of our family.
